IN NATURE'S REALM
My focus is on the Appalachian landscape, not only the terrain we've come to know with its varied and distinct mountain vistas and lush veil of atmosphere but the ongoing daily relationship we have with the land. I am interested in the reciprocity we have with the landscape, and how we carry it in our bodies and behind our eyes in our memories and dreams. These iconic vistas are not mere "scenes" on the outside. They and the elements they embody are part of our own physical makeup, our psyche, and ultimately, our soul.
We carry the minerals, the air, water and light of this environment within and we share the eros of the region. Our relationship with the natural world is constant and profound. The experience is both organic and mystical. I am ever grateful for the transcendent quality of life afforded by these ancient mountains. They teach me and they touch me deeply.
With this in mind, a certain number of my works serve as meditation pieces. These are works which are more contemplative and focus on the elements of nature. These are subjects fashioned by the earth, fire, water and vegetation. They are generally more simplified and focused in terms of their subject matter. They are compositions about elements or habitats. They are points of departure in our connection to the earth. They invite the viewer into meditation as Yeats "Arrow."
It is my deepest hope that as we deepen our awareness of this complex and beautiful relationship with Nature, we can begin to heal the earth and ourselves.
